Exploring Interlaken: A Journey Through Nature and Culture

Interlaken is a charming city located between two serene lakes and surrounded by the majestic Alps. As a part of our five-day trip, we decided to spend the last two nights at Interlaken, a place we’d heard so much about and seen hyped up by countless people.

On our first day at Interlaken, we decided to visit Grindelwald first then followed by a visit to Bern. Grindelwald is a picturesque village at the base of the Jungfraujoch mountain. The Jungfraujoch mountain also referred to as the “The Top of Europe”, stands tall at an impressive height of 3,463 meters.

Unfortunately, the weather in Interlaken wasn’t on our side — It was snowing heavily, and fog completely covered the surroundings. Despite this, the journey to Grindelwald was amazing. The scenery outside the train was mesmerizing that I couldn’t take my eyes off it, not even for a second.

Speaking of trains, the ride to Grindelwald on the Panoramic Express was an experience. As the name suggests, the train contains large windows that offer panoramic views of the snow-draped landscapes. Every moment of that ride felt like a scene from a Movie.

Due to bad weather, we couldn’t go further up from Grindelwald. Later we started our Journey to Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The journey to Bern was equally stunning. When the train passes through the lakes and tunnels, we are mesmerised by the beauty of the nature that God has created.

Bern is a small city. I thought a city like Hyderabad could easily fit four Bern kinds of cities within its boundaries! ;). Bern has a lot of history associated with it. It is one of the oldest cities.

Albert Einstein also lived in Bern for some time. He took an apartment in old city for rent and stayed there with his family. Now this place is a cafe and a spot for many locals to spend their evenings.

By the time we returned to Interlaken in the evening, we were starving and on the hunt for a good restaurant. That’s when we stumbled upon an Indian restaurant that was offering south Indian food — a rare find in Europe.

Typically, Indian restaurants here offer North Indian dishes, so seeing dosa, puri, idli, and the other South Indian items on the menu felt like finding Gold while digging 🙂

We eagerly ordered a masala dosa and a plate of puri. After Saravana Bhavan closed in Hamburg, it had become rare to find a good dosa. Making dosa batter at home is no small feat, especially with the cold weather complicating the fermentation process.

When Dosa arrived, the first look and a bite took me home to India. The taste was so authentic that I found myself lost in thoughts of home. The dosa was served with four different chutneys. Unlike many restaurants that claim to serve coconut chutney but barely include any coconut, this one nailed it.

Curious, I struck up a conversation with the restaurant owner. I learned that they were Tamil and had started the restaurant just three months ago. He shared his experience prior to setting up this restaurant.

Both, the owner and the chef were warm and friendly, and their dedication to preserving authentic flavors was evident in every bite. If I go back to Interlaken again, this restaurant will be on my must-visit list.

If you wish to try authentic Indian food, I recommend this restaurant. Its name is Nav Bharatam Restaurant Interlaken.
